DescriptionThe Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) under the authority of the Income Tax Act. CCTB applications are available from the CRA. The benefit is calculated based on the number of eligible children, their ages, the province of residence and the family net income.

To get the CCTB, you must meet all of the following conditions: you must live with the child and the child must be under the age of 18; you must be the person who is primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child; you must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes; you or your spouse/common-law partner must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, temporary resident, or protected person. Both the recipient and spouse/common-law partner must file an income tax return each year in order to receive payments.

ApplicationApplications can be obtained by calling the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-2221, by visiting their Web site, or for newborns, through the hospital where the child is born. Applications may also be made electronically through the "My Account" service which can be accessed using the link found on the CRA home page. To avoid delays please use only one method of applying
