|Description (Service)||A non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the organized capacity of people to care for one another, build communities and commitment. It supports a variety of organizations that provide services for all ages & needs throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes & Haliburton. More than 30,000 people are impacted through agency programs that are funded by United Way. By conducting an annual fundraising campaign on behalf of several vital agencies and programs, the United Way provides an efficient, and effective means for the community to give. A Citizen Review process involves more than 20 volunteers and donors to help review the funding requests by agencies allowing for accountable and impactful program supports. For the past 5 years, United Way has assisted with partners to write the Poverty Reduction Strategies for Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha Lakes and now sits on the Poverty Reduction Round Table.
More than five years ago it began a Community Garden program. More than 110 plots have been built: 105 in CKL; 9 plots in Haliburton were completed in the Fall of 2017. The latter was to support Community Living's gardens in Haliburton and recently funds were given to this agency for its greenhouse project .
Volunteers and Donors are essential to our success. Speakers are available for community and service groups. UWCKL has provided more than $65,000 in high school bursaries which are awarded to students who demonstrate leadership through volunteering.
